We have had a whirlwind of a month at Runyon Range! Let me give a brief catch-up of some of the latest happenings...
We built a "meat bird mansion" for our meat chickens...
We had our baby shower...
And we got the nursery ready for Baby Funyon's arrival!
Needless to say, there has been a lot going on! So, what is going on in the now??
This weekend, we saw some of the warmest temps of the year (it was a whopping 52 degrees today! HOT!), so it's time to get the homestead ready for the busy season! Layne spent the day on Monday raking the yard and getting all of the dead grass pulled up. This is going to make a huge difference when the grass starts to grow!
It is still too cold at night to seriously do any yard work, so I have been spending time getting the animals ready for spring! With the longer days, the animals are losing their winter coats, meaning they are all itchy and there is hair everywhere.
Exhibit A:
I think I've gotten a whole horse worth of hair off of Zoe at this point!
It is also almost time to shear the sheep; they have turned into total cotton balls. I am especially excited for this because I will get to process their fleeces and try my hand at spinning yarn!
In other news, the goats are starting to let on that they have some stowaways on board... Sassy is the same width as both sheep!
We are estimating that their due date is sometime around May 6th based on the average goat gestation of 150 days, so we are going to have all sorts of May babies with my due date being May 21st!
The chickens are also laying like crazy; we are averaging a dozen eggs per day! I am looking forward to testing out different recipes for pickled eggs with our fresh herbs.
Despite the mud spring brings, we are soaking up the rays of the warm sunshine and looking forward to all of the projects we have planned for this new season!
A flurry of activities and so much fun! Spring is here and babies (all around) will be here before you know it! I’m so excited for you!
